The mental game of basketball is a team sport that requires all players if they lose their composure to be able to regain it as quickly as possible. If not, the entire morale of the team will be affected, not to mention personal fouls and so forth. Basketball psychology is important when we are referring to these types of topics. For the psychology involved in the game requires players to keep their composure and if they lose it to regain it quickly, otherwise, as mentioned above, the entire team will be affected.
When basketball players lose their composure it is usually due to an underlying missing part of basketball mental toughness. Mental toughness is an absolute necessary component of being a successful player. Players have to be able to maintain their composure even in the midst of a tight game, frustration, or perhaps what they perceive as a bad call.
So what do you do if a player loses their composure on the court? How is it regained? Sports psychology for basketball suggests that there are a number of ways to handle this. First the coach can sit the player down and talk to him and remind him of the importance of being composed, of being mentally tough and of his importance to the team. What if he doesn’t respond to this and continues to go on and on with his tirade? Perhaps then it is time to leave him alone and let him sit.
The only problem with this scenario is if it’s one of your “star” players, the longer he sits the more he is going to be missed on the floor. Make sure and give him some water or Gatorade. Make sure he can see by sitting on the bench how much he is missed on the court. Remind him of the importance of winning but doing it with composure and self-control.
Additionally, it is important to remind the player that the only thing that he can control on the court is himself, his attitude and his leadership with his teammates. In this vein remind him psychologically of his importance to the team as far as leadership goes. That he is needed on the floor in a composed manner to be an example to the other players.
Remember, it does not matter if this is truly the “star” player on your team or not. In order to help players regain their composure they must be reminded of their importance to the team and their significance as a teammate to the other players.
When a basketball player loses his composure on the court it is of the utmost importance to try all avenues to help him regain it. If you are a coach, before pulling him out, give him the opportunity to show his basketball mental toughness and see if he can play through the lack of composure and come back to a point of regaining it while still being on the court. If a player can stay focused enough on the game, he will be able to do this.
I lose my composure sometimes. I gain my composure back by thinking of god and thanking him. I get angry at some calls at times but I am going to try some of these techniques to regain my composure
