Coaching the Mental Game for Champions: Vince Lombardi

Mental toughness is many things and rather difficult to explain. Its qualities are sacrifice and self-denial. Also, most importantly, it is combined with a perfectly disciplined will that refuses to give in. It’s a state of mind – you could call it character in action.” Vince Lombardi

His coaching methods, approach to football psychology, and on-field success cemented his legacy as one of the game’s most legendary coaches whose grit and football mental toughness created a trophy named in his honor.

Each February the last remaining football team is crowned as a champion and awarded the Lombardi Trophy in his honor. A brilliant strategist, an often-quoted football mind, and a man of great discipline, Vince Lombardi laid the foundation for the modern game of professional football mental coaching.

Good coaching can maximize talent and influence positive change. Bad coaching can stress too many rigid regulations and demands on players.

Vince Lombardi came into the professional football world with a keen perspective on football mental toughness, the hearts of players, and where a unity of team purpose could be of greatest value on some of the sporting world’s biggest stages. Football confidence means physically outmatching the man across from you, but to Lombardi a mental approach was of equal importance:

“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.”

At the time of his arrival to professional football there was a changing of perspectives on the game, and the psychology in football wasn’t necessarily the appropriate psychology for football – the largely ground-based rushing offense was slowly starting to play second fiddle to the more aerial-based passing offense.

Lombardi shouldered on, instilling in his players the importance of simple football concepts and flawless execution on the field. Training camps were relentlessly taxing on his players physically and mentally. Lombardi solidified firm leadership of his teams with a unification of purpose and dedication to success:

“In order to succeed, this group will need a singleness of purpose, they will need a dedication, and they will have to convince all of their prospects of the willingness to sacrifice.”

His ongoing pursuit of perfection was largely unattainable, but modern mental game coaches could agree that the mental preparation for such absolute success bolsters one’s mind, confidence, and football mental toughness. Modern sports psychology in football owes much of its practices to Vince Lombardi and the successes that his mental preparation for football yielded the teams he coached.

Five league championships in one decade earned him the reputation of being one of the most successful coaches of all-time. Football psychology articles can analyze every detail of his practice regimens and question their importance, but there is no denying the importance of Vince Lombardi’s unique football mental game and its lasting impact on all of professional sports.
