Be Composed & Win!

If you aren’t going all the way, why go at all?” Joe Namath

Composure is a key to being successful on the football field.

Athletes who display a high degree of composure under pressure naturally outperform others.

Success seems drawn to follow those who project a calm, cool, and self-assuredness manner on the field.

What is composure, and how do you prepare yourself for the mentally challenging moments in a game?

The Composure Concept in Football Psychology

Composure in football means, how calm and stable you are under pressure, especially in the big games, like championships.

Composure comes with football confidence.

Being a Composed Player

Many believe composure is something that you are born with or you are not. This is completely false.

It is important to understand that composure is not an innate gift that enables an absence of fear in high-pressure situations, but rather the mindful management of that fear. You can have control over how you feel about any given experience.

While it may not appear this way sometimes, with increased self-awareness and practice, you can learn to choose your personal beliefs, thus learning to develop greater composure.

Composed athletes know not to take things so personally when situations don’t go their way. If you take things personally, you will begin to behave defensively.

Instead, learn to let go of what is beyond your control.

The result is often a more composed self that is ready to tackle the problem at hand.

Negative self-talk is a crucial barrier to being a composed athlete.

It shows up most often right at the moment when you are assessing whether or not you can do something challenging. You hear a voice in your head like “that will never work,” or “what is everyone else thinking?”

That voice in your head is always telling you; you are not good enough.

Losing your composure affects the outcome of the game, which was apparent when Jay Cutler, with the Chicago Bears, lost his composure during a game and kicked an opposing player.

How calm and composed you remain in those situations, or even less dramatic ones that happen daily will make a difference in how successful you are.

The more relaxed and composed you remain, consistently over time, will have a direct impact on how often you play in games and how high you move up in your football career.
