“A key basketball skill is imagery. The best players “see” situations before they happen so they can be prepared” Dr. Jack Ramsay
Imagery is one of the greatest mental skills used in basketball. Therefore, understanding imagery is critical if you want to enhance your performance and elevate your game.
Studies on sports psychology for basketball have found that imagery, coupled with regular training, can improve memory and basketball skills faster than regular training alone.
In a competitive sporting world, the slightest improvement can make a massive difference for athletic success.
What is Mental Imagery?
Imagery is sometimes called visualization or mental rehearsal.
Imagery involves performing your sport in your mind using all of your senses – hearing, seeing, tasting, smelling, and feeling.
The images should have you performing successfully and feeling satisfied with your performance.
Kosslyn et al. describes mental imagery as an internally generated cognitive rehearsal of a task and is often described as ‘seeing in the mind’s eye,’ ’hearing in the head,’ and ‘imagining the feel of.’
Mental imagery might be better explained as image projection. It is the image in your mind of what you want to create or how you want to perform.
The subconscious mind is designed to bring about the images in your mind. Bringing about these images is very powerful in making needed improvements and creating what you want to happen.
Internal Imagery
Elite basketball players tend to use the internal imagery technique more often as part of their training and competition.
Michael Jordan is a great example. He used imagery and visualization. He would image himself, making the game-winning shot well before he stepped on the court. Jordan’s imagination fueled his success on and off the court.
External Imagery
External imagery perspective is where you watch yourself performing the action from an observer’s position as if you were watching yourself on television. It is viewing yourself from the point of view of a third person
Imagery is real and scientifically proven to enhance your performance. The better you understand imagery, and the more you practice imagery, you will undoubtedly elevate your game no matter what.
