“When I’m out on the football field, I have so much confidence in what I’m doing” — Tom Brady
According to sports psychologists, mental strength means that you regulate your emotions, manage your thoughts, and behave in a positive manner, despite your circumstances.
Developing mental strength is about finding the courage to live according to your values and being bold enough to create your own definition of success.
Mental Toughness has a direct relationship to your football confidence. As your football mental toughness rises, your ability to make affirmations also raises which eventually help you increase your football confidence.
We are what we think. An affirmation can work as it has the ability to program your mind into believing the stated concept. This is because the mind doesn’t know the difference between what is real or fantasy.
Becoming mentally strong will separate you from the pack and help you achieve higher levels of success.
Success validates the confidence you have developed in your ability; it demonstrates that your belief in your ability is well-founded.
Success further strengthens your football confidence, making it more resilient in the face of adversity and poor performance.
Success also rewards your efforts to build confidence, encouraging you to continue to work hard and develop your capabilities.
With prime confidence, you are able to stay confident even when you’re not performing well.
It keeps you positive, motivated, intense, focused, and emotionally in control when you need to be.
You aren’t negative and uncertain in difficult competitions and you’re not overconfident in easy competitions.
Confidence also encourages you to seek out pressure situations and to view difficult conditions and tough opponents as challenges to pursue. It demonstrates faith in your ability and your preparation. It enables you to perform at your highest level consistently.
Anything that counters your belief in your ability to achieve your goals will hurt your confidence.
The greatest disruption to confidence is failure. Failure will cause you to lose faith in your ability and cause you to become tentative or cautious.
There is nothing more harmful to confidence than failure because it provides evidence that any confidence you may have is unjustified.
Preparation is the foundation of confidence.
This preparation involves developing your football mental game, knowledge, experiences, skillsets, resources, and support necessary to achieve your goals.
It also means putting in the necessary time and effort into every aspect of your football mental performance preparations.
If you have developed these areas as fully as you can, you will have faith that you will be able to use these capabilities gained from preparation to perform as well as you can in the “heat of battle.”
The more of these areas you fully address in your preparation, the more football confidence you will breed in yourself.
To build your confidence you must change the way you think.
A 100% of the time it is 90% mental.
Confidence is a mind-set skill that doesn’t just happen by chance. You must work at it.
To build your confidence, specific strategies are required. These strategies can be found in my workbook – An Athletes Guide to Peak Performance Series – Building Confidence
