Mental Focus in Football

Leaders are made; they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Vince Lombardi

The ability to focus on football is one of the most important skills you must develop as a player.

If you are on the football field playing and your mind is wandering somewhere else, you will not be able to perform at your full potential.

In order to be successful, you must focus on what is relevant at that moment.

Stay Focus

Focus is the capability to give your full attention to the game without being distracted by external factors such as the crowd, noise, or internal factors such as negative self-talk or personal problems.

Below are two techniques that will help you stay focus.

• Deep Breathing
• Using positive self-talk
• Guided Imagery

Deep breathing ensures your body is getting enough oxygen for muscles to work at an optimal level. When you breathe deeply through your nose, your muscles relax, your blood pressure falls, your nerves are calmed, and consequently you have more endurance, more focus, and fewer injuries.

Positive self-talk boosts performance by helping you build confidence, enhance your belief in your ability to perform, reduce jitters, and improve your mood. It’s also particularly useful for tasks that involve strength and endurance, reaction time when faced with making a choice.

When athletes imagine a successful competition, they actually stimulate the same brain regions as you do when you physically perform that same action. Imagery in football is a way of conditioning your brain for successful outcomes.
