“It’s not whether you get knocked down, it’s whether you get up.” – Vince Lombardi
Just like our bodies, it is essential to nourish our minds. Feeding the mind constant impurities, negativity, and intangible thoughts can lead to automatic responses that will not benefit you.
How athletes train their minds to respond to failures and fears shapes their confidence, mental toughness, and overall psychology.
Over time, especially when left unchecked, the mind can dominate the conscious cognitive aspects of thinking, leading to default reactions based on past experiences.
In essence, an athlete who is not in control of their thoughts and actions will be held captive by their thoughts.
Becoming aware of these mental mechanisms is often the most challenging step in elevating an athlete to new performance levels. This awareness is typically the first step for many athletes in achieving their ultimate goals, particularly concerning their mental game and optimal performance.
Consider the athlete with a perfectionist mindset. These athletes often work extremely hard in practice, but when it comes to competition, they can falter due to their fears of not meeting their unrealistic expectations.
Their constant worry about making mistakes or not being perfect leads them to chase the illusion of perfection, which does not exist. As a result, they often feel they have “never” achieved their goals and are “never” satisfied, as nothing is ever good enough for them.
The most successful athletes possess the ability to perform with a functional mindset. This approach allows them to compete fearlessly, unencumbered by imperfections in their performance. They may make an error in one play, but they focus on succeeding in the next play. It’s about performing efficiently rather than perfectly.
By acknowledging that nobody is perfect and that mistakes are an inherent part of the game, athletes can begin to gradually feel the heavy burden they carry lifted.
This realization relaxes their minds and bodies, priming them for optimal performance.
