Setting Effective Goals in Football

Many athletes feel as if they’re adrift in the competitive sporting world.

They work hard to find success in football, but they don’t feel like they are getting anywhere.

One reason for this is the lack of clear direction. The way to get clear directions of what you want to accomplish is by setting goals.

Goal setting in football is a powerful process for thinking about your ideal performance and motivating you to turn this vision into your reality.

Why Set Goals?

How to Set Effective Football Goals?

Goals are set on several levels:
• First, you create the “big picture” of what you want to accomplish as a football player over the next three to five years and identify the long-term goals that will get you there.
• Second, break the big picture goals down into the smaller goals that you can achieve in 90 days.
• Third, break those 90-day goals down into monthly, weekly, and daily goals.

As you accomplish your goals, continue to develop new goals as self-development never ends.

Setting Long-term Goals

The first step in setting goals is to consider what you want to achieve in your football career.

Important areas are:
• Physique
• Mindset
• Game Intelligence
• Techniques

Spend some time brainstorming these things, and then select one or more goals in each category that best reflect what you want to do.

Setting Smaller Goals

Create a plan for progressively smaller goals that you should reach to achieve your big goal.
Create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today to work towards your football goals.

Staying on Course

Review and update your To-Do List daily.
Periodically review the long-term goals, and modify them to reflect your changing priorities and experience.

Setting SMART Goals

SMART stands for:
• S– Specific (or Significant).
• M– Measurable (or Meaningful).
• A– Attainable (or Action-Oriented).
• R– Relevant (or Rewarding).
• T– Time-bound (or Trackable).

Setting SMART goals means you can clarify your ideas and focus your football mind on getting the most out of your efforts.

It will increase your chances of achieving what you want.

Effective goal improves performance because it helps you to focus, it motivates you; it helps with transitions and the quality of your performance.
