Building Confidence in Football

Football Confidence- Sports Psychology for FootballThere is nothing unusual about lacking confidence in football. It happens to even the best of players. However, this lack of football confidence is also the turning point for most players. They either overcome this by building confidence in football or they quit. So do you want to be a winner or a quitter? The best way to build football confidence is with football mental game preparation. Football is pretty physical but a lot of the game is also mental.

There are various football psychology articles and exercises that are used to help build football confidence in players to help them achieve what they were destined to accomplish.

Sometimes the mental game preparation for football can be just as grueling as the physical aspect. You might not sweat as much but handling the mind is a whole lot harder than handling a football. The truth is that it is difficult to flip your confidence issues around in one day but the sooner you begin your mental preparation in football, the sooner you will build football confidence. In just a few days, you might feel better than ever.

There are many different tricks that you can use to help increase your football mental game. Not all of these tips are universal and they should be performed for a long period of time. Just because you begin to feel better one day does not mean that you should stop. In fact you should not stop your mental preparation because it will only make you a better football player and better person off the field.

Positivity also goes a long way. It can be hard to be positive all the time, but if you train your mind to do so, you will find that your football confidence will rise. You will run on the field strongly with confidence because there is not one thing that is wrong since everything that passes through your football mind is positive. Any negative comments have to melt away or bounce off of you. You cannot let them affect your mental toughness.

Use some meditation before each practice and game to help you to clear your mind. This will help you to focus in on your confidence right before you step out onto the field. Say to yourself that you will win and you will make every play. Don’t have any doubts. The football mental game is challenging especially for those players who have never engaged in mental preparation for practice. It is not easy but it will build your confidence and make you a more effective player on the field and in life.

i am a girl football player. i play tight end and wide receiver and it really does get hard but this article is most definitely hard! the moment you contemplate giving up is when you have to say to yourself, am i going to quit or am i stronger than this? it doesn’t happen over night, it takes hard work and dedication but its worth wild when you score or when your team wins and you really have to find your own reason why you love football. thats all i gotta say! believe in yourself and you will go far

They are a team of girls ages 12 to 14 and they are very nervous. My team is a well prepared team that can honestly win this tournament. • Delice Coffey says:

I can help but this is not a quick fix it will take time and a few sessions. One thing you can do to get started is take the free mental game assessment on the web site. This will give you and I some specific details to the areas that are preventing you form performing well in game and from there I can give you better advice.

I’m a linebacker wide receiver and a long snapper for my football team. I was the team captain this year and a 3 time all conference performer and was voted as the best linebacker on the team. My issue is that even though I’ve gotten these accolades, I still lack the confidence that I will succeed at the next level. I will be attending a junior college in the fall. I want to have the confidence in myself to go out and reach my potential with no hesitation. Could you help?

    • Delice Coffey says:

Sure. I am going to sent you a one page assessment. That will give us specific information as to what the issues are and we can set goals from that to help you build confidence.

  4. Griffin Self says:

I play corner back for my high school team (11th grade) And my coach says my skills are really good and all but that I need to get more aggressive in the game, like when they throw the ball to the receiver I always hesitate before I hit them. So it’s not my big hit I need to be giving and I just get nervous before I hit not when I get hit just before I need to get my confidence up and my aggressiveness.. Can anybody help me?

    • Delice Coffey says:

There a many players that share this issue and building confidence is the place to start. To answer your question there is help out there. I have a program specifically for helping athletes build confidence. If you like I will give you the assessment free and you can see if the program will help. Send me your email address and I will email it to you. Send it to xcoffey@aol.com. Need help with my flag football team confidence…..

    • Delice Coffey says:

If the girls are well prepared reinforce that. Help them to understand that they have the skills to win the tournament and they must trust in their abilities because they have worked hard to get there. Let them know that being nervous and over thinking will interfere with good performance and what they can do. Also let them know if they relax and trust in their skills (because they practiced hard) they will do well. Moving forward I would suggest incorporating relaxation techniques as part of your training and practice routine. For today, tell them to take very deep breath and let it out quickly before each play. Let me know how you all do? Good Luck

  7. Axel says:

Hi, it was awhile someone wrote here, but I hope someone can still help. Anyway, I am 14 years old and plays for a Swedish club called Göteborg Marvels, I have played all positions beside Lineman but I have most experience as Quarterback and Runningback. Right now I start as Runningback but is also backup at Quaterback. To the point, I have issues to run up the middle, taking big hits (I am pretty small), put down my shoulders for trucking (when I play defence, this isn’t a issue) and even ingames I doesn’t have the confidence to do things I do often on training like go 1 on 1 with a Linebacker and try to make him/her I am pretty fast but it doesn’t always work to run fast. My thought is that I have lack of confidence. I think it’s because I have always been so small and big guys always hit me hard and high. The main reason I think is because when i started to play football, I was 1 time I received a really hard hit (I was 10 and the defender 13 I think, in Sweden we play with U13, U15, U17 etc.) So I need help to build up my confidence. I will answer asap if someone sends a mail or something. But remember, it can be hard because the time ain’t the same in Sweden as in USA

      Hi Axel!

I am so sorry for the delay. I’m not sure how I missed this. Well anyway, welcome back!

From what you described building confidence will help you. It’s hard to say that is the problem specifically without me doing an assessment but players some times know what they need to do and just need help doing it. I would suggest purchasing my book – An Athlete’s Guide to Peak Performance Series: Building Confidence and we consult on a regular basis or you can do an assessment and I can put a more specific personalized plan together for you. Let me know. Feel free to email me at my personal email address – delicecoffey@gmail.com

      All the Best 🙂
