Game Time Mental Toughness

How do you get mentally tough during the game and maintain it?

This and many more questions are being asked regularly by football players. Yes, it is true that before a player goes on the field, he  has already set out goals to meet in that particular game.

However, it takes more than merely setting goals and making efforts; it takes mental toughness to make progress and actually meet those goals to win games.

When participating in a game and striving to achieve the best results, there are a lot of things that come to play. For an athlete to make that “striving” effort, mental toughness is one of the determinant factors to achieving those set goals for the game.

This includes but not limited to a combination of composure, confidence, relaxation, understanding, visualization and awareness. All these elements help to a great extent towards attaining and maintaining mental toughness.

A lot of approaches are employed in the bid to improve the mental toughness in every football player during the game. There are certain things that help to turn athletes on and get them going during a game. In understanding football psychology, it should be noted that the players have the need to be in tune with whatever it is that spurs them on during games.

It could be in the form of sounds. For example, the cheers from the crowd, encouraging the player and his teammates along the way to help him and his team achieve and maintain a unique mental toughness that will see them through the game.

Research has shown that most top athletes have used one form of sports psychology or mental game coach to improve mental toughness and to gain tremendous mental edge over the competition. Engaging athletes to develop their mental game will go a long way to help them achieve and maintain a strong mental edge before, during and after every game.
