“Control what you can control. Don’t lose sleep worrying about things that you don’t have control over because, at the end of the day, you still won’t have any control over them.” – Cam Newton*
Cam Newton has quickly become a familiar name to fans of American Football around the world.
Even before being selected first overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2011 National Football League draft, he was regarded as a unique and exceptional football mind, with the confidence to bring his mental game to the highest level.
Through challenges and adversity Newton has triumphed above his adversaries, using football mental toughness and mental preparation to achieve greatness in his budding career.
Newton has faced adversity throughout his career, brought on by faceless governing bodies as well as those closest to him. Following an incident, Newton was quoted saying “I believe that a person should not be thought of as a bad person because of some senseless mistake that they made, I think every person should have a second chance. If they blow that second chance, so be it for them”.
Newton continues to work on his mental game in football to this day, and as this article is written, has led his Florida Panthers to a league leading 14-0.
In his still very young career, Newton is widely regarded as the league’s Most Valuable Player, and is rivaled only by Tom Brady, a player who many consider to be one of the greatest of all time and the peak of football mental toughness.
Newton is no newcomer to the world of awards. In his final year of college football as an Aubern University Tiger, Newton won the Heisman Trophy, the National Championship, and was drafted first overall in that year’s NFL draft.
In doing so, Newton became the only quarterback of the modern era to achieve all three in the same year, a testament to his mental toughness in football.
Many things go into developing a truly great football player, especially mentally on and off the field. A strong football mental game is apparent in our hall of famers and up and comers alike, and it is those players that actively work on their football mental game and overall mental preparation that reach the upper echelon of performance.
Cam Newton knows this, and focuses his mind in order to have the football confidence to be great.
